LCON’s StrongRN Program Empowers Male Nursing Students with Professional Development and Career Readiness
On Friday, May 2, 2025, the Loewenberg College of Nursing (LCON) Student Success Team, in collaboration with STS Enterprises and the Christopher A. Pugh Center, hosted an impactful End-of-Year Professional Development Session for male participants of LCON's Supporting the Retention of Next Generation Registered Nurses (STRONG-RNs) program. This professional development initiative, dedicated to empowering male nursing students, provided crucial guidance as they prepare to transition from the academic environment to the demands of the nursing workforce.
Held at the Christopher A. Pugh Center, the event focused on equipping participants with the skills and confidence needed to thrive professionally and personally. Throughout the session, student nurses engaged in discussions covering essential topics such as navigating the transition into the workforce, understanding financial literacy and effective budgeting, and the significance of professional attire and image. Attendees also explored social-emotional wellness strategies and post-graduate career planning, gaining insights that extended far beyond traditional classroom learning.
One of the most memorable moments of the session was each nursing student receiving a suit, generously provided by the Christopher A. Pugh Center. This gesture symbolized more than just a polished appearance; it represented readiness, confidence, and a step toward leadership in the nursing profession.
Dr. Jeremy Whittaker, Associate Dean for Student Success, spoke about the power of community partnerships and the tangible impact they have on student success. "Partnerships like this are vital to our community. When we bring together expertise, resources, and a shared commitment to student success, we create opportunities that go far beyond the classroom. This session was not just about professional development; it was about equipping our students with the confidence and practical skills to thrive," Dr. Whittaker shared. His remarks underscored the importance of bridging academic preparation with real-world readiness, ensuring that LCON graduates are not only knowledgeable but also professionally poised.
For graduating senior Jalen Gatewood, the event offered a unique opportunity for growth and reflection. "This event was more than just a professional development session—it was a safe space where we could grow, learn, and support one another outside of the traditional classroom setting. I’m grateful for the opportunity and the connections I made," Gatewood expressed. His sentiments captured the essence of the StrongRN Program's mission: to build a community of resilient, well-prepared men ready to make a meaningful impact in nursing.
The evening concluded with remarks from Jeremy Calhoun, President of STS Enterprises, who spoke about the event's significance. "It was a powerful night filled with celebration, transition, and wisdom. We honored an inspiring group of young men graduating with their bachelor's degrees in nursing," Calhoun stated. His words reflected the pride and optimism shared by all in attendance as they celebrated the accomplishments and promising futures of these emerging nursing professionals.
The End-of-Year Professional Development Session was a testament to LCON's commitment to holistic student development, ensuring that its graduates are equipped not only with clinical expertise but also with the confidence and professionalism required to excel in the field. Through strategic partnerships and community support, the StrongRN Program continues to inspire and prepare the next generation of nursing leaders.
