PhD in Applied Linguistics

You can now earn the PhD in Applied Linguistics completely online through UofM Global. The PhD program in Applied Linguistics prepares students to teach and conduct original research in the US and abroad. Students specialize in areas of applied linguistics, including Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), second language writing, bilingualism, language policy, sociolinguistics, critical and multimodal discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, second language acquisition, and more. Students are prepared to research, teach, and consult in institutions of higher education, the US State Department and other governmental agencies, and multicultural workplaces.

Students earn a minimum of 72 credits in this program, with up to 30 credits of transfer possible for students who hold a prior MA in Linguistics, TESOL, Language Education, Translation Studies, or another closely related area. Students take courses in both TESOL and Applied Linguistics. Students complete coursework and the candidacy process and then work intensively with a mentor and committee to complete a dissertation based on original Applied Linguistics research.

All faculty have years of experience teaching Applied Linguistics and TESOL courses successfully online and supervising doctoral research projects. Students in the program have presented research at conferences such as Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) International, American Association of Applied Linguistics (AAAL), Sociolinguistics Symposium, Second Language Research Forum, Tennessee TESOL, Southeast TESOL, and other regional, national, and international conferences, and have submitted research for publication in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes.
