Grant applications for external funding opportunities are overseen by the University.
The granting process begins with a submission to the CAYUSE system. The Department Chair, Dean, and any other participating offices on campus must approve
the entire funding file before the application can be submitted.
Please send an email to the Department Chair and college Dean at least 1 week prior
to CAYUSE submission, providing a brief overview of the grant (cutting and pasting
from the grant application is fine) and an expected submission date. This allows the
chair and dean to be fully prepared to approve the proposal in a timely manner.
A buy out of a faculty member’s teaching load is dependent on the amount of funding
a project receives. A buyout indicates the department and university have enough resource
in the award to pay to protect faculty time for the funded project, and those monies
will go toward the payment of an adjunct to cover the course(s) for a funded faculty
member.
Internal Funding
The Graduate School, the College of Communication and Fine Arts, and the Department
of Communication and Film all have potential funding resource opportunities for faculty.
The Graduate School releases a range of opportunities each academic cycle that provide
opportunities to win financial awards and require involvement with other partners
on campus.
The CCFA has a program of seed grants that is announced on a varying schedule, typically
with non-prescriptive flexibility. Find more information on the college web site:

The Department of Communication and Film supports research travel funding requests
on an individual rolling basis, depending on the financial availability. Requests
can be submitted through the departmental website (https://www.cognitoforms.com/UofMDeptOfComm/RequestForTravelSupport ) and are reviewed by the Chair.
