Tennessee Board of Regents Funds Equity Project
Project encourages increase in access to educational materials and improved outcomes.
Dr. Diana Ruggiero, associate professor of Spanish in the Department of World Languages and Literatures, received an Open Education Resources (OER) Cycle 3 Tier 1 grant for Healthcare Interpreting Course Redesign in the amount of $29,997 for grant period July 1, 2022- June 30, 2023.
The OER grant was awarded by the Tennessee Board of Regents to increase equity in access to quality, no/low-cost educational materials. The project is designed to increase success rates and improve educational outcomes for traditionally underserved students, including, but not limited to, students of color, first-generation college students, and economically disadvantaged students.
Dr. Ruggiero is the pedagogical leader for the grant and, as such, designed the content for an OER book for medical interpreting in partnership with an Instructional Designer.
To create the OER text, Ruggiero wrote, directed, and filmed 12 medical interpreting videos. She also took courses and participated in professional development to become familiar with online pedagogy, learn about the process of creating OER materials, obtain ideas on how to shape the videos and the book chapter, and develop a sense of real-life application.
