HONORS at the U of M Lambuth

The Helen Hardin Honors College at the University of Memphis Lambuth is basically the same program as at the University of Memphis in Memphis, but there are a few differences since the UM Lambuth campus is smaller and has fewer faculty and fewer students. While the fundamental eligibility, benefits, and requirements are the same, some of these difference are as follows:

Joining Honors (HERE) – the eligibility requirements are the same – 24 ACT or equivalent in other tests and a 3.25 high school GPA (unweighted). In general, these qualifications will result in an automatic designation of ‘honors eligible’ and an email to the student with this information.

We do understand that some students may have excellent test scores but less than the minimum high school GPA or excellent GPA and less than minimum test scores.

In these circumstances, students may still apply to the Honors College. Students will need to complete the online application (find the APPLY HERE link below) and may be required to provide a résumé, essay, transcripts,  and letter of recommendation upon request. Students can  email Dr. Mego for UM Lambuth or the UofM Honors College.

We also realize that an invitation email for those who are automatically eligible for the Honors College can be misplaced! In this case, filling out the application should be sufficient to re-activate the automatic eligibility status.

For incoming Freshmen the priority deadline for Fall Honors College application is July 1 with the decision date August 1. For Spring semester, the priority deadline is January 4 with the decision date January 15.

NOTE: There are UM Lambuth ONLY Honors scholarships available!  Contact Dr. Mego for more information.

Transfer Students will need a 3.25 GPA. Transfer students with MORE than 60 hours of credit who want to attend the U of M Lambuth are required to meet with Dr. Mego (or any Honors College academic advisor at the University of Memphis) to determine effective pathways to complete the Honors College graduation requirements. The Honors College will accept transfer courses with Honors designations from a previous institution with a “B” or higher toward U of M Honors College graduation requirements. This includes transfer courses with the Honors designation from Jackson State Community College Honors courses or Dyersburg State Community College.

Current U of M students who are not first year students are also eligible to apply to the Honors College. A 3.25 GPA is required and students with more than 60 credit hours will need to meet with Dr. Mego for U of M Lambuth or with any Honors College advisor to determine a successful path to fulfill Honors College graduation requirements.

The Largest Honors College in Tennessee

Nowhere else in the state will top academic performers find a richer, more diverse experience than at the Helen Hardin Honors College at the UofM. Memphis is the epicenter of culture, commerce and creativity. It's a city that has moved the world in more ways than one, and you, too, will be driven to do more.

The Helen Hardin Honors College has a wonderful reputation for attracting the brightest students. They come largely because of our extraordinary professors, small classes, and never-ending opportunities to do research in a variety of disciplines. Our students are award winners, having won the Truman, Goldwater, Fulbright, and Rotary scholarships in recent years, as well as major campus awards. And that is what the Helen Hardin Honors College is about — providing intellectual challenge and opportunities for outstanding students.

Our Namesake, Helen Hardin

Helen Hardin was passionate about the city of Memphis. She and her husband, Jabie Hardin, were also longtime supporters of the University of Memphis. Before her death at the age of 95, Helen Hardin gave a significant gift to the University for the benefit of honors students; in recognition of her generosity, the program was named the Helen Hardin Honors College. In both life and death, Helen Hardin helped shape a better Memphis. As co-founder of wholesale food distributor Hardin's-Sysco, Hardin was known for her entrepreneurial spirit, and she was the perfect role model for honors students. The Hardin legacy lives on in this honors-only academic environment that encourages hard work, rigorous study and high expectations.
