NIH Professional Development For Faculty
Review services for submissions
The Division of Research & Innovation hosted a four-part professional development series for faculty and research staff to help improve award rates with NIH. The series, conducted weekly throughout the month of September, covered the components of the NIH submission process and included the review criteria for NIH submissions, content for specific aims and narratives, discussion of animal and human subjects study requirements. Also included in the series was a specific deep dive on R15 requirements. The University of Memphis is eligible for R15 under the current guidelines, and this is a great funding mechanism for those who have not previously PI'ed a grant with NIH. Most large research institutions are not eligible for R15, which greatly reduces the competitive pool of applicants.
The series also emphasized that the Division of Research & Innovation is providing external review services for all grant submissions to federal agencies. These review services strengthen applications and help ensure the best possible outcomes from the funding agencies. To take advantage of the service, simply email researchdev@memphis.edu approximately 60 days before the deadline with the plan to submit all documents for review approximately 30 days before the federal submission deadline. Additionally, the Gap Funding program is currently taking applications from faculty that seek to revise and resubmit federal grant applications that were not funded on their first try.
