Praxis Core: Academic Skills for Educators Tests (Reading, Writing and Math)

  • Teacher candidates WITHOUT an ACT composite score of 21 or a combined SAT score of 1020 must retake the ACT/SAT and earn the required score OR pass all three subtests of the Praxis Core exam to be admitted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP).
    • An ACT Superscore of 21 will also be accepted. Superscoring is the process of averaging your four best subjects scores from all of your ACT attempts (English, Math, Reading and Science).
  • Candidates must receive a passing score on each subtest (Reading, Writing and Math)
    • Those students who have an overall GPA of 2.75, have passed two Praxis Core subtests and are within 5 points of the passing score for the third subtest may apply for TEP Alternate Admissions rather than retaking the third subtest.
  • Teacher candidates MUST be admitted (or alternately admitted) to the Teacher Education Program by November 1st of their junior year.

Praxis Core Exams

  • All three subtests can be taken together by selecting test code 5752 when registering
  • The subtests can be taken individually using the test codes for each subtest,
    • Taking the subtests individually is more expensive.
  • Candidates who take the 5752 combined test but do not pass all three subtests can retake just the subtest(s) they did not pass. 

Praxis II: Content Knowledge Exams, Teaching All Learners Majors 

  • All Praxis II exams must be passed by December 1st of the fall semester of Residency I
    • Candidates who do not meet this deadline will NOT move on to Residency II the following semester.
  • Study companions, study plans, interactive practice tests and registration details can be found on the ETS website>.
  • To receive a TN teaching license for Elementary Education (K-5), candidates must pass both the Elementary Education Multiple Subjects (5001) exam and the Teaching Reading: Elementary (5205) exam.
  • To receive a TN teaching license in both Special Education Interventionist (K-8) and Special Education Interventionist (6-12), candidates must pass both the Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Application (5543) and the Teaching Reading Elementary(5205) exams.
  • Candidates who pass all three exams will receive a total of three licenses:
    • Elementary Education (Kindergarten-5th grade)
    • Special Education Interventionist (Kindergarten-8th grade)
    • Special Education Interventionist (Grades 6-12)

  • To pass the Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects test, candidates must receive a passing score on each subtest.
  • To take all four subtests at the same time, select test code 5001 when registering.
  • Subtests can be taken individually using the test codes for each subtest.
    • Taking the subtests individually is more expensive.
  • Candidates who choose to take the 5001 but do not pass all four subtests can retake just the subtest(s) they did not pass.

  • All Praxis II exams must be passed by December 1st of the fall semester of Residency I
    • Candidates who do not meet this deadline will NOT move on to Residency II the following semester.

  • To receive a TN teaching license for Early Childhood Education (PreK-3rd grade), candidates must pass all three Praxis II Content Knowledge exams listed below.

Praxis II: Content Knowledge and National Evaluation Series Exams, Integrative Studies – Secondary Mathematics Majors

  • All Praxis II exams must be passed by December 1st of the fall semester of Residency I.
    • Candidates who do not meet this deadline will NOT move on to  Residency II the following semester.
  • Teacher candidates interested in receiving a TN teaching license for Secondary Mathematics (6-12) must pass EITHER the Praxis II: Mathematics (6-12) Exam OR the NES: Mathematics (6-12) exam.
  • Teacher candidates interested in receiving a TN teaching license for Middle and Early Secondary Mathematics (6-10) must pass the NES: Mathematics Middle Grades and Early Secondary Mathematics (6-10) exam.
  • Those candidates who pass the Praxis II/NES for grades 6-12 should NOT take the NES Middle/Early Secondary Math (6-10) exam.
