Aquatics at the Rec Center
Welcome to the CRIS Aquatics department, where safety and security are top priorities. Water sports and recreation offer the fun factor in fitness, but it is very important that all our visitors follow proper aquatics safety rules for everyone's benefit. If the pool is open, our lifeguards are on duty (at least three at all times). Progressive security measures are in place, creating a comfortable and safe environment for all U of M faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members. So, make your next workout in the pool and come meet our friendly staff to learn about the low-impact, total body, invigorating workout that swimming provides!
Navy ROTC will be sharing the indoor pool during the early bird swimming hours on the following dates:
- Feb 5
- March 18
- April 1
- Monday-Friday: 5:30-8 a.m., 1-7 p.m.
- Saturday: 12-5 p.m.
- Sunday: 1-5 p.m.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Courses
Learn the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize, and respond to emergencies in or around the water! Course covers caring for victims of breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel arrive and take over. Learn to save lives!

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course
The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress. This course is taught in the style of blended learning. This class will be broken up into online components along with the traditional classroom setting. There is approximately 7 hours of online work that must be completed before the first day of each class. Online modules will be available once the Pre-requisite skill evaluation has been completed *Pre-Requisite skills MUST be completed one week prior to the first day of class. The cost of the class is required up front before the pre requisite skills test will be given. Refunds are NOT given for those who do not meet requirements.
Pre-requisite skills include demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:
- Swim the following strokes consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 4 Front Crawl, 25 yards Back Crawl, 25 yards Breaststroke, 25 yards Elementary Backstroke, 25 yards Sidestroke, 25 yards Butterfly, 15 yards
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
- Tread water for 1 minute
