Ethical and Legal Obligations of Supervising Lawyers Under Tennessee's "Supervised Practice" Rule

This dual credit CLE will address the Tennessee Supreme Court's "supervised practice" rule, which provides a mechanism for Tennessee attorneys to supervise the practice of recent law school graduates prior to bar admission. This CLE will address the requirements of the rule (Section 10.04 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 7), as well as the legal and professional conduct obligations of supervising attorneys acting under the rule. Presenters will also discuss the Tennessee Supreme Court's recent temporary modification of the rule to extend the time of supervised practice for Spring 2020 law school graduates.

Presenters are:

Paula Schaefer, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs & Professor of Law, University of Tennessee College of Law. Schaefer regularly teaches and writes in the area of attorney ethics. Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Tennessee College of Law, she practiced in the area of commercial litigation in Kansas City, Missouri.

Jodi Wilson, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Director of Legal Methods, & Associate Professor of Law, University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Memphis, Wilson was a litigator with a national civil litigation and arbitration practice, focusing on business disputes and securities industry arbitrations. She teaches classes in Legal Methods, Advocacy, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Professional Responsibility.

Brad Morgan, Director of Career Services, University of Tennessee College of Law. Morgan is a frequent speaker on the topic of professional development, and serves on multiple committees in areas related to this topic. Prior to joining the University of Tennessee College of Law, Morgan practiced law with a large national law firm.
