Public Health Workshops for Community Champions

A space for community champions to connect with each other around the most current and pressing issues in the public health of Memphis’s neighborhoods.

Workshop Goals

  1. Enhance Emotional Literacy

To elevate everyone's understanding and application of trauma-informed care, establishing a shared language for discussing emotional experiences.

  1. Strengthen Cohesion and Mutual Support

To build supportive, empathetic environments within the health department and the broader community, valuing both individual and collective insights.

  1. Foster Community-Wide Engagement

To equip all participants with the tools and confidence to engage meaningfully in trauma-sensitive interactions, thus strengthening our shared social fabric.

Description of Workshop Series for Community Champions

This workshop series is to empower community members in Memphis by focusing on emotional literacy, trauma-informed care, and collective well-being. In a city with unique urban challenges, community wellness is not just an individual pursuit but a collective responsibility. We aim to build a more empathetic community that can contribute meaningfully to local policy changes, enhancing public health and overall well-being.

WORKSHOP 1: Tuesday, September 26th, 5:30-8:00 pm

Facilitated by Kelli Harris, LPC-MHSP
Expected outcomes for community leaders include an enhanced capacity to foster supportive and empathetic environments within their organizations and a heightened sense of responsibility for contributing to trauma-informed practices at the community level.
 

WORKSHOP 2: Thursday, October 19th, 5:30-8:00 pm

Facilitated by Dr. Kirsten Hawes, LPC-MHSP
This workshop will provide participants with valuable insights into the relationship between childhood trauma and lifelong health and social consequences.
 

WORKSHOP 3: Thursday, November 9th, 5:30-8:00 pm

Co-facilitated by Kelli Harris, LPC-MHSP & Dr. Kirsten Hawes, LPC-MHSP
This workshop will combine principles from previous sessions as emotional resources for deeper personal reflection.
 

WORKSHOP 4: Tuesday, November 28th, 5:30-8:00 pm

Led by Tonya Meeks
Expected outcomes include increased knowledge on how to quantify and cultivate social capital within community organizations and a set of community-specific recommendations for enhancing trauma-informed practices.
