Office of Experiential Learning and Career Readiness
The Office of Experiential Learning and Career Readiness at the University of Memphis
School of Public Health is dedicated to preparing students for successful careers
in public health. The office facilitates hands-on learning opportunities through internships,
practicum, and fieldwork placements, connecting students with leading organizations
and professionals in the field. Additionally, OELCR provides comprehensive career
services, including resume and interview preparation, job search assistance, and networking
events. By bridging academic knowledge with practical experience, the office empowers
students to achieve their professional goals and make a meaningful impact in the public
health sector.
"This was my first semester as a graduate student and before the semester started,
I was highly concerned on not succeeding academically and was afraid on what to expect
during my new experience of schooling. The OELCR had me to take a deep breath and
told me I was going to have to let the past experience go and get ready to embrace
my new journey in the graduate school and do not fear that I won't be successful in
the program. Throughout the semester I always reach out to the OELCR for advice before
I made certain choices and each time, they were available to assist me. I succeeded
in my first semester of graduate school, and I believe that the OELCR shined a light
during this new journey which helped me pave the way."

“The OELCR was very helpful in coordinating with me (student) and the organization
I was working with. They followed me for every process and made sure everything was
done on time. They also made sure to clear all the doubts I had in the process of
my practicum.”
Student, School of Public Health
“The OELCR was incredibly helpful throughout my practicum experience! In the semester
prior to my practicum, I met one-on-one with my professor to discuss my career goals
and the skills I was hoping to strengthen during my experience. Based on their advice,
I decided that my top choice would be the Shelby County Health Department. The team
at SPH did the work to find a preceptor at SCHD who was willing to host me, set up
our initial Teams meeting with my preceptor, and answered all of my questions throughout
the process. They also helped to coordinate a carpool with another MPH student placed
at the same organization.”

“I would like to thank the SPH for giving the students an opportunity to experience
the OELCR. The OELCR helps students selflessly and effortlessly. Being great at mock
interviews, resume build up, career opportunities search, networking, and organizing
important events for SPH, I hope they continue to help students find a proper path
of navigating graduate school.”
Student, School of Public Health
“I would like to thank you the OELCR for the amazing service and support provided…I
sincerely appreciate the excellent work that you do, and so do many other students”

“The OELCR at the SPH has been incredibly supportive, especially in my efforts to
secure employment. The OELCR has been instrumental in assisting me with organizing
my CV, providing valuable guidance on my cover letters, and, most importantly, connecting
me with institutions that are actively recruiting. Beyond the practical support, they
have been consistently encouraging, frequently checking in with me and showing genuine
interest in my progress. Thoughtful questions reflect their dedication and concern;
being a team I can always rely on. I am truly grateful to have people looking out
for me during this journey.”
