Minor in Population Health Informatics

About the Program

The Public Health Informatics minor is an eighteen (18) credit hours program designed to prepare students from health-related and STEM disciplines with the necessary understanding, skills, and competencies in modern health informatics. This program focuses on developing, implementing, analyzing, and evaluating information systems to health outcomes and healthcare services. It is ideal for students pursuing majors in public health, healthcare, computer science, information technology, or related fields who work with data and use computational tools to analyze health information and want to develop expertise in modern health informatics to improve healthcare systems and population health. There are no prerequisites to declare a minor in Population Health Informatics.

Program Requirements

The program requires eighteen (18) credit hours as follows: 

Lower Division Core (1 course - 3 Credit Hours) 

Choose one of two options: 

  • PUBH 2181: Population Health and Society
  • HLSC 2200: Introduction to Public Health & Health Sciences*

Upper Division Core (3 courses - 9 Credits Hours) 

Select any three courses: 

  • PUBH 3150: Health Data Analytics and Informatics Credit Hours: (3)
  • HCL 3020: Healthcare Informatics ** Credit Hours: (3) 
  • PUBH 3103: Fundamentals of Population Health Informatics Credit Hours: (3)
  • PUBH 4102: Applications of Health Informatics in Population Health Credit Hours: (3)

** HCL 3020 can be used to substitute for PUBH 3150, but students should not take both courses.

Electives (2 courses - 6 Credits Hours) 

  • PUBH 4103: Managing Population Health Data Credit Hours: (3)
  • PUBH 4151: Analytic and Research Methods in Public Health II (3)

 

Competencies

The students will be able to: 

  • Understand the principles of health informatics to address important or emerging issues in population health
  • Use modern computational and statistical tools to collect, manage, and code quantitative and qualitative data in population health
  • Apply epidemiological and biostatistical methods to analyze data and interpret results
  • Employ evidence-based approaches to inform public health research, policy and practice  
  • Assess population health needs and community capacities in communities
  • Design and evaluate health informatics interventions to address population health issues
  • Understand and discuss cultural competence, racism, structural bias, and other social inequalities in population health
  • Assess population health literature and research quantitatively and critically
  • Communicate population health issues scientifically and effectively
