Women's History Month 2013

What an incredible month! During March of 2013, University of Memphis Community celebrated "Women Making History Every Day" to celebrate not only the historical women who have paved the way for change and advancement for women, but also the everyday women in our lives who have contributing to making change right in our own homes and communities.

Our campus came together and celebrated women with a month full of wonderful events and celebrations (see the WHM 2013 Calendar for detailed schedule), as well as by sharing stories of the women that shaped or influenced our lives in myriad important ways.

WHM 2013 Winning Poster

"Women making history every day"

This year's theme was especially important to our community. Various discussions, events, and gatherings gave students, faculty, and staff a chance to express their thoughts and feelings about heroines of both the everyday and historic varieties. Another exciting aspect of WHM is seeing the ways in which women really do make history every day through acts big and small; along with a number of more serious events, we were even able to bring some joy to the University Center with a Women's History Month Flash Mob (you can see the video here)!

In addition to holding an art (poster) contest, we also invited students and faculty to share their stories about the women who have made history in their lives. We were very pleasantly surprised with the response -- we received over 300 written submissions! Honored were mothers, step-mothers, grandmothers, sisters, teachers, advisors, professors, and co-workers. Pieces were selected and displayed during the opening event for Women's History Month, but you may still read the student writings here, the faculty writings here, or learn about the artists and artwork that went into making this year's winning art poster on the "Artists' Statements" page.
