Dr. Bumgardner presents NIH sponsored research work aimed at improving oral health at Academy of Dental Materials
Biomedical Engineering faculty member, Dr. Joel D Bumgardner presented NIH sponsored research work entitled “Evaluation of an Electrospun Chitosan Membrane for Guided Bone Regeneration as Compared to a Collagen Membrane in a Porcine Mandibular Defect Model” at the Academy of Dental Materials Meeting, held October 2-5 2024 in Torino, Italy. The work highlighted the potential of a new membrane for supporting bone regeneration prior to implant therapy in dental/craniofacial defects caused by periodontal disease or injury. The work was performed with UofM BME graduate student, Samarth Vedante, UofM undergraduate BME student, Joseph Egbodo, clinical collaborators at UTHSC College of Dentistry and collaborators at New York University Dentistry.
