Residence Halls and Dining

Recognizing that campus housing and dining are essential for a large number of our students, these facilities will also remain open. Specific cleaning and social distancing guidelines will be shared with those utilizing University housing and dining facilities. The campus is not closing. Buildings will remain open, and day-to-day campus operations will continue. There will likely be some limitations in operations and services, however, as there will be a need for remote operations of some units.

We encourage our campus community to dine in the campus dining locations to provide safe and convenient meal options during this time. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to rstwart7@memphis.edu. For current dining hours, visit https://dineoncampus.com/UofM/uofm-dining-hours-of-operations. University Schools

- Closed through Spring 2020 Semester  -

On Tuesday, April 14, Sally Parish, Associate Vice President for Educational Initiatives, released a statement to University School students that we are officially transitioning to virtual learning for the remainder of the academic year within our University Schools. As such the Early Learning & Research Center, Campus School and University Middle physical locations will remain closed through the scheduled conclusion of the spring term on May 22.. We will, however, continue to provide remote instruction for all of our University Schools students. The viability of Summer Camp and Summer Bridge programs is still being explored, and we hope to share more in early to mid-May about those programs. For more information, contact universityschools@memphis.edu.

Given continued state and federal guidance, as of March 9, we have discontinued all faculty, staff and student international travel through the end of the semester. Anyone returning to Memphis from a CDC Level 2 or 3 deemed country are required to self-quarantine prior to returning to campus. While we are not discontinuing domestic travel at this time, we encourage faculty, staff and students to exercise judgment when considering domestic travel and avoiding or postponing travel where practical. Any summer travel restrictions will be evaluated in the coming months in accordance with available state and federal guidance.

Guidelines are available for faculty, staff and students returning from travel, including any indicated need for evaluation through our Health Center and any potential for quarantine. Guidelines and other FAQs are available on our website, FAQs related to Coronavirus and the UofM.

Activities and Events

President Trump advised people to avoid gathering in groups of more than 10 people on Monday, March 16.

Events: Effective March 15, the CDC, in accordance with its guidance for large events and mass gatherings, recommends that for the next 8 weeks, organizers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 10 people or more throughout the United States. University-sponsored events (i.e. outside of academic instruction) with more than 10 attendees need to be postponed, cancelled or reconfigured as to minimize large gatherings.

Graduation: This cancellation period covers the University of Memphis graduation, originally scheduled for May 9. Although we will not be able to celebrate our seniors and others scheduled to graduate in May in the traditional manner because of the significant risk to the public health, we will celebrate and honor spring graduates with a virtual ceremony. We are actively monitoring COVID-19, and if circumstances change for the better, we are planning for a traditional commencement ceremony in late summer or early fall. We will invite our spring graduates to participate in a traditional ceremony as soon as we are able to safely schedule one.

Although it is not the traditional ceremony, Online Commencement is a way to remember you on the original graduation date and share that moment with family and friends. The online ceremony will include your picture if you choose to send one in, the pronouncement of your name and messages from administrators and alumni. Your mortar board (graduation cap) and 2020 tassel will be mailed to your home the week of May 9. Graduates will receive additional information via email.

Please note, students who successfully complete ALL of their degree requirements for the spring 2020 semester will receive their diploma in the mail, two-three months after May 9. Diplomas will be mailed to the address the student provided to the commencement office on the graduation application. To update your address, please contact the commencement office directly at commencement@memphis.edu. This process remains the same, only the ceremony would be postponed.

Athletics: Effective March 12, the American Athletic Conference announced both the cancellation of the men’s basketball tournament and the suspension of all spring competitions until further notice.
