April 8, 2015 - University of Memphis students, faculty and staff, and the wider Memphis community, are invited to celebrate the planet at the University of Memphis Earth Day event Thursday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The festivities will take place at the TIGUrS Urban Garden, which is located directly behind the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Those attending Earth Day will have the chance to browse tables featuring sustainability initiatives by organizations both on and off campus. They also can get an "up close and personal" view of the TIGUrS Garden and get answers to gardening questions. There will be yoga and Zumba, live music by the Mason Jar Fireflies and Aaron Brock, and prize giveaways. A butterfly release will take place at 11:45 a.m. A free lunch will be served beginning at 11 a.m.
New this year is the All Things Bike Fest, sponsored by the Planning Student Organization. The event will include a bicycle parade at noon, bike safety and repair demonstrations and "bike blender smoothies." There also will be vendors, including Bikesmith, MATA and the Memphis Hightailers Bicycle Club.
