UofM Lambuth Nursing Program Adds State-of-the-Art Childbirth Simulator
January 16, 2020 - The University of Memphis Lambuth continues to enhance its highly-ranked Nursing program. It now has one of the world’s first augmented reality childbirth simulators with integrated physiology, the CAE LucinaAR.
“The $107,000 simulator allows for student practice in pre-partum assessment and care, labor and delivery (both routine and emergency), patient transport and post-partum management,” said Dr. Christie Manasco, assistant dean of Nursing at UofM Lambuth. “This is the first simulator of its kind in West Tennessee, and we expect to continue to maximize advances in technology to offer the best nursing education to our students.”
The added Microsoft HoloLens technology will provide students the ability to visualize the passage of the fetus through the birth canal. This is the first simulator to offer real-time, interactive 3D holograms of anatomy as well as responsive mother-baby physiology. The unique experience introduces students to visual cues that prepare them to safely manage delivery.
“We are excited about our continued growth in the Nursing program, which has approximately 170 BSN students enrolled,” added Dr. Niles Reddick, dean of the Lambuth Campus.
“The Loewenberg College of Nursing is nationally ranked and fully accredited by CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) and TNBON (Tennessee Board of Nursing),” said Dean Lin Zhan. “Nursing programs – the BSN, RN-BSN and Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Lambuth – are excellent examples of quality academic offerings to promote student success and meet workforce needs of the community.”
