Purpose of the Repository
The Mississippi Embayment Research Center (MERC) serves as a repository dedicated to curating geological collections and associated datasets to advance modern science and research. To achieve this the MERC seeks to:
- Preserve and curate current collections while expanding to support future research and education.
- Distribute geological samples to facilitate scientific study and learning.
- Promote FAIR practices and increasing accessibility through web and data services.
Collaboration and Impact
The MERC fosters collaboration among regional universities, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private industries. By cultivating a cooperative research environment, we leverage collective expertise and resources to tackle both existing and emerging environmental challenges. This approach ensures that scientific advancements benefit the broader community, strengthening regional resilience and sustainability.
Education and Workforce Development
MERC is committed to education and workforce development, with a focus on expanding STEM participation, particularly among residents of the Mid-South and the surrounding Mississippi embayment. A core priority is building robust research and training infrastructure to cultivate the next generation of scientists and engineers. By equipping them with the skills to responsibly manage natural resources and address critical environmental challenges in the Mississippi River Delta, the MERC aims to drive lasting scientific, societal, and economic impact.
