Application Requirements 

Auditions are held to determine admission into School of Music programs and to award performance scholarships and graduate assistantships. Please review the admission requirements for your program of interest below. Note that your field of interest may encompass multiple areas. For example, students applying for the B.M. in Music Education must apply to the program and audition in their applied area.

2024 Audition Deadlines

  • Deadline for preferred consideration for university-wide academic scholarships: December 1.
  • Deadline to apply for Spring Semester Entry: December 1.
  • Prescreen Audition Deadline for Graduate Voice and Conducting Applicants: December 1.
  • Early Action Music Deadline: December 2. Students who complete an application to the university and School of Music by December 2 will receive admissions and scholarship decisions before the winter break.
  • The deadline for full consideration for a Music Scholarship is March 1
  • Deadline to apply for Fall Semester Entry: July 1.

Audition Formats

Attendance at one of our audition event dates is encouraged. Alternatively, students may request a virtual or individual audition appointment.

Audition Days for 2025 Admission

  • December 7, 2024
  • January 25, 2025 - virtual auditions only
  • February 22, 2025
  • March 1, 2025

Audition Scheduling

Applicants may select their preferred day and method of audition on the School of Music application

Virtual Audition: To be assigned a virtual audition time, students must submit audition videos via YouTube, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive. Instructions will be emailed to student upon signing up.

Audition Day Experience

Audition day activities typically start in the morning and run until mid-afternoon. Students will be assigned a specific audition time about one week before their audition day. Events will be scheduled throughout the day that will allow you to get to know the School of Music and your future classmates. During that time, you may experience the following activities:

  • General welcome assembly and performance
  • Program and applied area meetings
  • Auditions and interviews
  • Parent and family Q&A sessions
  • Scheidt Family Music Center facility tours

Undergraduate Audition Information

Undergraduate auditions are approximately 10 minutes long. During your audition, you may be asked to: 

  • Perform all or a portion of your prepared audition pieces
  • Play major or minor scales
  • Sight read
  • Do pitch/rhythm recognition exercises (voice applicants) 

Faculty members are very interested in getting to know you as a person and may ask you a few questions during the audition. They may also provide you with constructive feedback and answer any questions you may have for them.

Faculty in your area of interest will confirm a day and time and send a Zoom link.

Audition results are emailed 1-2 weeks after the audition day. If accepted, applicants must submit an Enrollment Intent Form (April 15 for Graduate Applicants and May 1 for Undergraduate Applicants) to inform us of their plans. Students must be admitted to the university before a School of Music decision is rendered.

Dates & Deadlines

  • Early Action: December 2. Students fully admitted by December 3 will receive admissions and scholarship decisions before the winter break.
  • Scholarship Deadline: March 1. Students who complete their audition by March 1 will receive the fullest consideration for music awards.
  • Scholarship notifications are sent separately via email in mid-to-late March.

Graduate Audition Information

Graduate auditions are approximately 15 minutes in length. During your audition, you will be asked to: 

  • Perform your prepared audition pieces
  • Play scales
  • Sight read
  • Do pitch/rhythm recognition exercises (voice applicants)

Some areas, like Conducting, may require other activities as a part of the audition process, and auditions may be scheduled outside of the normal audition days.

Faculty in your area of interest will confirm a day and time and send a Zoom link.

Graduate Voice and Conducting requires a pre-screen audition with a December 1 deadline. Please see the audition requirements for more details. The Graduate Program Manager will notify applicants of their status and schedule a second-round audition as appropriate.
