Strings Audition Requirements

Cello - Undergraduate

  • Major and minor scales.
  • An etude.
  • Two works contrasting in tempo and style like a movement of a concerto and a movement of a Bach Cello Suite.

Cello - Masters of Music (MM) & Artist Diploma (AD)

  • A movement of a standard concerto (Dvorak, Schumann, Saint-Seans, Elgar, Haydn C or D, etc.) or comparable solo piece (Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations, Bloch Schelomo, etc.).
  • Two contrasting movements from a Bach Cello Suite.
  • An etude.

Cello - Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA)

  • A movement of a standard concerto (Dvorak, Schumann, Saint-Seans, Elgar, Haydn C or D, etc.) or a comparable solo piece (Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations, Bloch Schelomo, etc.).
  • Two contrasting movements from a Bach Cello Suite.
  • An additional work of the applicant's choice.

Classical Guitar - Undergraduate:

  • Three contrasting pieces of your choice demonstrate your technique and musicianship.
  • A typical program might include a nineteenth-century study (by Carcassi, Sor, Aguado or Giuliani), a movement from a Bach lute suite and a more modern piece.
  • Two-octave or three-octave scales. One major and one melodic minor scale of your choice.

Classical Guitar - Masters of Music (MM) & Artist Diploma (AD)

  • Three contrasting pieces of your choice demonstrate your technique and musicianship.
  • A typical program might include a substantial ninetieth-century work, a movement from a Bach lute suite and a substantial romantic or modern work.
  • One three-octave major and three-octave melodic minor scale of your choice

Classical Guitar - Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA)

  • Three contrasting pieces of your choice demonstrate your technique and musicianship.
  • A typical program might include a concerto movement, a sonata movement and a fugue by Bach.
  • Three octave major and melodic minor scales in all keys

Double Bass - Undergraduate

  • Major scales, two octaves
  • Two contrasting movements of a standard sonata or concerto or two contrasting etudes

Double Bass - Masters of Music (MM) & Artist Diploma (AD)

  • Two contrasting movements of a standard sonata or concerto
  • One movement of work from an additional style period

Double Bass - Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA)

  • A complete concerto
  • Two contrasting movements from one of Bach's Suites for solo cello

Viola - Undergraduate

  • An etude
  • Two works contrasting in tempo and style

Viola - Masters of Music (MM) & Artist Diploma (AD)

  • Two contrasting movements from one of Bach's Suites for solo viola
  • A movement from one of the major viola concertos such as Bartok, Walton, or Hindemith Der Schwanendreher
  • An additional work of contrasting style

Viola - Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA)

  • A complete Bach Suite for solo viola
  • A movement from one of the major viola concertos such as Bartok, Walton, or Hindemith Der Schwanendreher
  • An additional work of contrasting style

Violin - Undergraduate Degrees

  • All major and minor three-octave scales and arpeggios
  • Two works contrasting in style and tempo
    • Applicants for the performance degree should specifically prepare as their two contrasting works: (1) an outer movement of a standard concerto and (2) a movement from one of Bach's Sonatas or Partitas for solo violin

Violin - Masters of Music (MM) & Artist Diploma (AD)

  • An outer movement of a standard concerto from the 19th or 20th century
  • Two contrasting movements of one of Bach's Sonatas or Partitas for solo violin
  • An additional work of contrasting style
