Percussion Audition Requirements

Percussion - Undergraduate

  • Snare Drum
    • Demonstrate rudiments: long roll-closed; pianissimo crescendo to fortissimo; decrescendo to pianissimo; flam, flam tap, and accent.
    • Demonstrate reading knowledge from Goldenberg's Modern School for Snare Drum, Cirone's Portraits in Rhythm or similar snare drum method.
    • Sight-reading.
  • Keyboard/Mallet:
    • Major and minor scales, two octaves.
    • Any selection from Bach's Two-Part Inventions top part only, or Bach's a-minor Violin Concerto, third movement, or any of the 39 etudes found in the Goldenberg Modern School for Xylophone, Marimba, and Vibraphone.
    • Sight-reading.
    • A four-mallet marimba solo is encouraged, though not required. Suitable solos include works by Ford, Peters, Sammut, and Stout.
  • Timpani:
    • Tuning of all intervals
    • Technical proficiency on 3 timpani at the level of Mitchell Peter's Scherzo for Three Timpani, Garwood Whalley's Statement for Timpani, or three timpani exercises from the Goodman or Friese-Lepak timpani methods
    • Sight-reading

Percussion - MM

  • Snare Drum:
    • Piece from Douze Etudes pour Caisse Claire by Jacques Delecluse or equivalent.
    • 1-2 Standard orchestral excerpts recommended but not required.
  • Marimba or Vibraphone:
    • 4 mallet work that demonstrates proficiency and musicality, e.g. Schwantner, Druckman, Vinao, Pickering, Cangelosi, or equivalent.
    • 1-2 Standard orchestral excerpts recommended but not required.
  • Timpani:
    • Work for 4 drums. Suitable repertoire includes works by Carter, Beall, Psathas, Houllif, Cahn, Kraft, or equivalent.
    • 1-2 Standard orchestral excerpts recommended but not required.
  • Choice of work for multi-percussion, hand percussion, or drum set styles (rock, funk, swing, mambo, bossa nova).

Percussion - DMA

  • Snare Drum:
    • Piece from Douze Etudes pour Caisse Claire by Jacques Delecluse or equivalent.
