Message to Campus
Dear Tiger Family,
The recent events occurring near our campus have rattled us all. The senseless, violent
crime against Eliza Fletcher is felt by the University and the entire city. Last night’s
episode of a person driving through Memphis and DeSoto County shooting at people and
buildings has exacerbated an already tense and emotional situation.
Despite these two events, we are ranked as having the safest large campus in the state
of Tennessee. Our dedicated UofM officers work diligently to keep us safe, and the
UofM’s extensive network of cameras on and near campus ensure we capture activity
on video.
When our officers received word last night that an active shooter was near our campus,
the campus was locked down. Although we have protocols in place for an active shooter
situation, this episode is a reminder of the need to ensure everyone is aware of and
follows the proper protocols. Consequently, we will review our communication and training
of the protocols and processes.
If you ever feel unsafe on campus, please call Campus Police at 901.678.4357 or use
the LiveSafe App. Store this number in your phone and use it when needed. If you need
to speak to someone who can help you cope with these recent events, please contact
our Counseling Center.
Your safety is our top priority, and we will continue to look for ways to make our
campus safer.
Bill Hardgrave
President
University of Memphis
