You're invited to the Second Annual Research Computing Symposium on September 3rd:

Research Computing is hosting a half-day of presentations to highlight the many different ways our research community is using the HPC. Please plan to come to the University Center, room 300, the morning of September 3rd, 8:30a – noon-ish. Feel free to pop in and out as your schedule permits, but make sure you at least stop by first thing in the morning for a coffee, snack, and a chat with the research computing team and other researchers.

We'll be updating the info page on our website here as we get closer to the event, so check back for updates.

Globus downloads straight to the HPC: With a lot of help and patience from the Puckett Lab, we now have Globus Connect Personal available on the HPC to enable our researchers to transfer large files straight to the HPC using our BigBlueWeb OnDemand interface. View instructions on our wiki »

The search for a new GA: The Research Computing team is sad to see our long-time, and inaugural, GA Brinton leave us but excited to see him excel in the next phase of his career. Now we're on the hunt for a new GA to try to fill his shoes. If you know someone that may be a good fit, feel free to reply to this email and let us know.

Programming Tips

Writing your code can sometimes be the easiest part of software development - we all know that much of our time is usually spent hunting down and figuring out how to fix sneaky bugs. Julia Evans is a well known programming writer in Montreal. (She also builds choose-your-own-adventures to help learn programming techniques) She has a great guide on what the process of debugging looks like to a professional and how to do it in a more structued and efficient way. She also lists some really great sources on where to dig even deeper on debugging.
