Attending a live musical performance for the first time can be an exciting experience. Here are some etiquette guidelines to ensure you and your fellow guests can enjoy the performance:

  1. Download tickets to your phone: When you download your tickets before you leave your house when you arrive, you’ll be able to scan them and go straight to your seats.
  2. Attire: While there's no strict dress code for attending the performances, it's customary to dress in business or business casual attire. Men often wear suits or dress pants with a collared shirt, while women may opt for dresses, skirts, or dressy pantsuits. The Scheidt Family Performing Arts Center is on a college campus, so attire will vary.
  3. Arrive on time: Musical performances generally start punctually, and it's considered rude to arrive late. Aim to arrive at least 15-30 minutes before the scheduled start time to allow for finding parking, picking up tickets and settling into your seat. Our box office is open 1.5 hours before the concert time if you need to purchase tickets or pick them up at will, call.
  4. Late arrivals: If you do arrive after a performance has started, it is customary to hold guests until after the first piece is completed to avoid distracting other guests and performers.
  5. Silence your devices: Before the performance begins, turn off or silence all electronic devices, including cell phones, smartwatches, and tablets. Using these devices during the performance can be distracting to both performers and other audience members.
  6. Observe the no-talking rule: Once the performance begins, refrain from talking, whispering, or making any unnecessary noise. Musical performances require concentration from both the performers and the audience, and talking can disrupt the experience for everyone.
  7. Clap at appropriate times: Applause is typically reserved for the end of arias, duets, and other significant musical moments, at the end of each act and the conclusion of the entire performance. A sure way to applaud at the appropriate time is to follow the conductor's cues. At the end of a piece, the conductor usually turns to face the audience as an invitation for applause.  If in doubt, wait for someone else to clap.
  8. Avoid excessive movement: While it's natural to shift in your seat or adjust your position occasionally, minimize any unnecessary movement during the performance. This includes rustling programs, unwrapping candies, or shuffling belongings, as these noises can distract those around you.
  9. Enjoy the show: Perhaps the most important part of a performance is sitting back and enjoying the show.
