Cynthia Stockton is an Associate Professor of Teaching in Sociology at the University of Memphis. She earned both her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, with a minor in Women and Gender Studies, and her Master of Arts in Sociology from the University of Memphis. Her graduate research focused on suicide prevention in adolescence, reflecting a broader scholarly interest in mental health and social well-being.

Professor Stockton’s teaching and academic interests include gender, family, relationships, race and ethnicity, and social statistics. She teaches a range of courses, including Introduction to Sociology, Social Statistics, Sociology of Gender, Families in Society, Love, Sex, and Relationships, and Racial and Ethnic Minorities. She especially enjoys teaching social statistics, where students’ curiosity meets the analytical skills they need to better understand and interpret the world around them.

Her work in the classroom is characterized by a commitment to student-centered instruction that emphasizes critical thinking and the application of sociological perspectives to contemporary social issues. She is particularly dedicated to helping students examine the social forces that shape identity, relationships, and life outcomes, while developing the analytical tools necessary to engage thoughtfully with the social world. She was recognized with the 2019 W. Russell and Audrey E. Nesossi-Smith Award for Teaching Excellence at the University of Memphis.
