Assistant Professor of Teaching and Internship Coordinator

Dr. JoAnna Boudreaux is an Assistant Professor of Teaching and Internship Coordinator in the Department of Sociology at the University of Memphis. She earned her PhD in Communication Studies and her master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Memphis.

Dr. Boudreaux is a transdisciplinary scholar whose research examines motherhood, maternal health, reproductive justice, immigration, and religious identity. Her work has been published in the Journal of Mother Studies, Journal of Autoethnography, and Listening: Journal of Communication Ethics, Religion, and Culture. She is the author of Islam and Motherhood: Discourses of Faith and Identity (Peter Lang, 2024) and the textbook Borders and Belonging: Sociological Theories on Race, Ethnicity, and the Making of America (Kendall Hunt, 2025). 

Dr. Boudreaux teaches a variety of courses including:  Race & Ethnicity, Gender & Society, Medical Sociology, and AI,Power & the Sociology oif Knowledge. She also coordinates internships for Sociology majors and minors.
