A Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Memphis.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our department. As Chair, I am proud to be part of a community that is passionate about using engineering to improve human health and quality of life. Biomedical engineering is not just a field of study—it is a field driven by curiosity, compassion, and the desire to make a meaningful difference for patients and their families.

During my years as a faculty member and researcher, I have had the privilege of working with outstanding students, colleagues, clinicians, and industry partners. One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is watching our students grow from talented learners into confident engineers, researchers, healthcare professionals, and innovators. Their creativity and dedication continually inspire me and reinforce the important work we do every day.

At Memphis, we believe that the best biomedical engineers are developed through a combination of rigorous academics, hands-on design experiences, and meaningful research opportunities. Our students work closely with faculty on projects involving biomaterials, tissue engineering, medical devices, regenerative medicine, biomechanics, and other emerging technologies that have the potential to transform healthcare. We are committed to creating an environment where students are encouraged to ask questions, explore new ideas, collaborate across disciplines, and pursue ambitious goals.

What makes our department especially special to me is the sense of community we have built. We are large enough to offer exciting research and educational opportunities, yet small enough that faculty know our students personally and are invested in their success. I believe that mentorship, accessibility, and collaboration are essential to helping students reach their full potential, and these values guide my approach as Chair.

The University of Memphis is uniquely positioned within a growing medical and biotechnology community, providing opportunities for partnerships with healthcare providers, researchers, and industry leaders throughout the region. These connections help our students gain real-world experience and contribute to innovations that address important healthcare challenges.

Whether you are considering joining our undergraduate or graduate programs, seeking a research collaboration, or reconnecting with us as an alumnus or friend of the department, I invite you to explore all that Biomedical Engineering at the University of Memphis has to offer. I am excited about the future of our department and the impact our students, faculty, and partners will continue to make in advancing human health.

Thank you for visiting our website. I hope you will connect with us and become part of the University of Memphis Biomedical Engineering community.
