Associate Professor of Music Education Josef Hanson had his article "Early Career Music Teachers: Collegiate Experiences, Job Satisfaction, and Predictors of Retention," which was co-authored with music education Ph.D. student Michael Bradley, published in the journal Update: Applications of Research in Music Education.

The study examines music education alumni perceptions of their undergraduate degree experiences, career attainment, career satisfaction, and the extent to which various educational, career, and/or demographic variables increased the likelihood of them remaining in the teaching profession.

Additionally, Hanson was recently appointed to the editorial board of the Bulletin for the Council of Research in Music Education and will serve a four-year renewable term. The Bulletin has been a leading journal in the field of music education since 1963, providing a respected forum for original research, critical inquiry, and scholarship that deepens our understanding of music teaching and learning.

Hanson was also recently elected Chair of the Emotion, Expressivity, and Engagement special research interest group within the National Association for Music Education. In this capacity, he will lead efforts to facilitate research that broadens our perspective on human affective response and its connection to total engagement with music in its various forms. The focus includes emotion, expression, motivation, social-emotional learning, agency, kinesthetic engagement, belongingness, empathy, and engagement with music from diverse cultures.
