National First-Generation Celebration Week

On November 8, colleges and universities across the country recognize first-generation students, as well as faculty and staff who were first-generation. This date also commemorates the day Congress approved the Higher Education Act (HEA) in 1965. The HEA was intended to ensure equal opportunities for underprivileged students to attend college by providing federal grants and loans to help finance the cost of a college education. This legislation made critical investments in institutions and funded programs to increase the access, retention, and graduation of first-generation, low-income students.

A National Celebration Centering First-gen Voices will feature a panel of first-gen students and graduates sharing insight into their experience, moderated by Dr. Quintin B. Bullock, President, Community College of Allegheny County located in Allegheny Pennsylvania. It is through our understanding of the first-gen identity and experiences we may better align institution resources and support offerings to meet the unique needs of first-gen students. Panelist: - Ms. Alaura Ervin, legislative assistant, Office of Senator John Cornyn, TRIO Alum - Ms. Alexia Patino, undergraduate student, North Central College - Ms. Pierina Sanchez, Democratic nominee, New York City Council, TRIO Alum - Mr. Sly Worth Jr., graduate student, The Ohio State University.
