Our engineers work on the planes that companies like FedEx use to ship products globally. They build structures for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to help doctors cure childhood cancer and they improve drones and robots that keep our country safe.

Memphis Is Innovation
Herff continues to find ways to impact the world around us. In 2026, Dr. Ali Fatemi represented the University of Memphis by giving the lead plenary lecture about defects on fatigue strength and modeling at an international conference. A group of Herff students created an AI-powered drone that easily identifies debris in streams and the Polytechnic@UofM launched its BAS program in Applied AI.
Memphis Is Research
The research happening at Herff helps us understand all of the components of life, from the way our blood flows to the air we breathe and the technology used to keep us safe. The grants obtained by Herff professors help us design hybrid microgrid systems for energy storage, improve safety on Tennessee roads, and develop an REU site to explore the ways that AI can be used in multidisciplinary engineering research for guided exploration.

Through internships and co-ops, students at Herff have every opportunity to succeed professionally before they ever graduate college. Industry partners like Flintco and St. Jude provide internships for Herff students and collaborations like the Urban Fellows Program let students get experience working in city government.

With more than 18 student organizations, there's a place for everyone at the Herff College of Engineering. And you can surround yourself with that community from your fist day on campus by living in the Engineering Living and Learning Center, a dorm devoted to engineering students who help each other thrive inside the classroom and relax outside of class.

From building medical devices to improving roads and developing devices the government will use to keep us safe, researchers at Herff aren't just improving our daily lives. They're securing our future through innovative technologies.
Our students study groundwater safety, the health of our streams and rivers and find new ways to track urban flooding. They examine ways that AI could shape our future, develop battery storage systems to improve electric vehicle safety, and create data-advancing systems to enhance safe driving on Tennessee roads. They also find ways to improve water runoff from those roads.
In the lab, student researchers work on safely implanting foreign objects into the body in order to improve the lives of people across the world. They work with industry partners to solve real-world engineering problems companies deal with in Memphis. Whichever area of daily living matters most to you, Herff offers you a chance to study it and find ways to improve it.
