University of Memphis highest-ranked in Tennessee for 2nd straight year by U.S. News & World Report

Jan. 26, 2021 — The University of Memphis is the highest-ranked institution in Tennessee for the second straight year by U.S. News & World Report in its 2021 rankings of online programs. UofM’s status began its incredible climb four years ago, culminating with the top spot in back-to-back years.

The eight UofM Global programs that are ranked nationally and deemed U.S. News Best Online Programs include:

  • Online Criminal Justice (graduate), No. 21 (increased from No. 24 in 2020 and No. 51-67 in 2018)
  • Online MBA for Veterans, No. 26
  • Online Business, No. 27
  • Online Bachelor’s Program for Veterans, No. 34
  • Online Nursing (graduate), No. 45
  • Online MBA, No. 45 (increased from No. 62 in 2020 and from No. 89 in 2018)
  • Online Bachelor’s, No. 53 (increased from No. 125 in 2018)
  • Online Education (graduate), No. 146

“We are honored to continue to climb in the U.S News & World Report Rankings and to once again be ranked as the No. 1 institution in the State of Tennessee,” said UofM President M. David Rudd. “For sure, this has been a very challenging year for everyone – our students, faculty and community.

“It is a tribute to the hard work of our great faculty and staff, not only for this past year, but over the past seven years. Seven years ago, we had only a single program ranked, our online MBA. We continue to make remarkable progress.”

Seven of the eight programs are ranked No. 1 in Tennessee while Online Education-graduate is ranked No. 2 in the state.

"The US News and World Report rankings clearly reflect our long-standing commitment to building a foundation of quality online programming,” said Dr. Richard Irwin, executive dean for UofM Global & College of Professional/Liberal Studies. “At no time in our history has quality been more important than this past year as we grew more dependent on the breadth of our online programming to ensure student progress and success."

Three programs showed significant increases in the last four years: Online Criminal Justice-graduate rose to No. 21 from No. 51-67 in 2018; Online MBA increased to No. 45 from No. 89 in 2018; and Online Bachelor’s has climbed to No. 53 from No. 125 in 2018.
