Emily PuckettWhy Aren’t All Black Bears Black? Research by UofM Professor Emily Puckett, PhD, Helps Find Answers

Emily Puckett, PhD, an Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Memphis, has devoted her career to learning more about the evolution and genetics of bears. With help from partners in state, provincial, and federal wildlife agencies, she collected hundreds of DNA and hair samples from North American bears. She teamed up with Greg Barsh, MD, PhD, Faculty Investigator at HudsonAlpha, and animal pigmentation expert to figure out why black bears aren’t always black.

Dr. Dipankar Dasgupta, director and William Hill professor of Cybersecurity at the University of Memphis, has been selected as a prestigious National Academy of Inventors Fellow for the Class of 2022.

commencementUofM to Hold Commencement Dec. 11 at FedExForum

The University of Memphis will recognize 1,744 graduates from fall 2022 with two commencement ceremonies at noon and 4 p.m. on Sunday at FedExForum. The Honorable Justice Holly Kirby, who became the first graduate of the University of Memphis to serve on the Tennessee Supreme Court, will be the commencement speaker. She was the first woman in Tennessee history to serve on the Tennessee Court of Appeals at the age of 38 in 1995.

UofM College of Education Receives CAEP Accreditation 

The University of Memphis College of Education has been accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The Fall 2022 review by the CAEP Accreditation Council resulted in 55 educator preparation providers receiving accreditation under the rigorous, nationally recognized CAEP Accreditation Standards.
