FedEx’s Rob Carter appointed to University of Memphis Board of Trustees

May 11, 2023 — Rob Carter, executive vice president, FedEx Information Services and chief information officer of FedEx Corporation, has been appointed to the University of Memphis Board of Trustees by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee.

“I am extremely honored to join the University of Memphis Board of Trustees,” said Carter. “I look forward to working with the Board and administration to help realize the University of Memphis’ mission – to provide the highest quality education by focusing on research and service benefiting local and global communities.”

Carter will replace Alan B. Graf Jr., who has been a member of the inaugural University of Memphis Board of Trustees for six years. Graf served as the inaugural Board Chair for a two-year term from March 2017-March 2019 and spent an amazing 40-year career at FedEx before retiring as executive vice president and chief financial officer on Dec. 31, 2020.

“The UofM Board of Trustees is delighted to welcome Rob Carter and thank Gov. Bill Lee for his appointment,” said Chairman Doug Edwards. “These are exciting times at the University of Memphis, and we will look to Rob’s knowledge and experience to help the University continue to grow. Rob is another strong addition to our Board, and we look forward to working with him.

“The Board is also grateful to Alan Graf for his leadership and love for the University of Memphis as well as his service as being the first Board Chair in our school’s history. The University of Memphis will always be fond of and indebted to Alan and his family.”

Carter is a member of the six-person Executive Committee, which plans and executes FedEx Corporation’s strategic business activities. He also serves as the co-President and co-CEO of FedEx Services, the shared service entity responsible for sales, marketing, information technology and customer service.

“The University of Memphis welcomes Rob Carter as an integral part of our outstanding Board of Trustees,” said UofM President Bill Hardgrave. “Rob will be an exceptional addition to this Board and will bring 30 years of experience from FedEx with him. I want to personally thank Alan Graf for all he has done for the University of Memphis for decades. The University of Memphis and our City have definitely reached greater heights for many years because of Alan.”

Carter joined FedEx in 1993 and has more than 40 years of systems development and implementation experience. He is responsible for setting the technology direction of the FedEx applications, infrastructure and networks that provide around the clock and around the globe support for FedEx product offerings.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in computer and information science from the University of Florida and his MBA from the University of South Florida.

Carter has been awarded many industry accolades, including Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business, Fortune Magazine’s Executive Dream Team, Forbes Magazine CIO Innovation Award, Information Week’s Chief of the Year Award and is a charter inductee of CIO Magazine’s CIO Hall of Fame.

Carter serves on the Board of Directors of New York Life.
