For Dr. Stephen Behrman, the saxophone is both a reminder of his childhood and a source
of renewed inspiration. The instrument played an important role in his early life
and helped shape his appreciation for music and artistic expression. Over time he
stepped away from playing, but the connection he felt to the saxophone never truly
disappeared. Years later Dr. Behrman returned to the instrument and rediscovered the
joy that first drew him to music.
As he resumed playing, Dr. Behrman began studying with saxophonist Dr. Michael Shults.
Through this connection he was introduced to the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt
School of Music and the community of musicians who study and perform there. While
becoming more familiar with the program, he met students in the Saxophone Studio and
had the opportunity to hear them perform. Their dedication, discipline and passion
for the instrument stood out immediately. Seeing the level of commitment these students
brought to their practice and performances made a strong impression and underscored
the importance of supporting young musicians as they develop their skills.
Inspired by the talent and enthusiasm he encountered, Dr. Behrman and his wife Robin
decided to support the future of the program and its students. Together they established
a scholarship fund to assist saxophone majors as they pursue their studies at the
University of Memphis. They also created an endowed fund to strengthen the Saxophone
Studio and provide support for initiatives such as visiting artists, masterclasses
and other studio activities that enhance the student experience.
Through their generosity Dr. Stephen and Robin Behrman have helped expand opportunities
for students within the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. Their support allows students
to focus more fully on their artistic growth while connecting with a broader network
of performers and educators. Their commitment reflects a belief in the value of music
education and a desire to ensure that future generations of saxophonists at the University
of Memphis have access to the resources, experiences and mentorship they need to succeed.

“Saxophone was a big part of my childhood, but life pulled me away from it for decades.
Two years ago, I started playing again and reached out to Michael Shults for lessons,
which introduced me to the University of Memphis Scheidt School of Music. After meeting
several students, I was inspired by their passion and dedication and wanted to support
them. My wife, Robin, and I created a scholarship fund for saxophone students and
an endowed fund to support the Saxophone Studio, including visiting artists and other
studio needs. It has been a joy to work with this group, and I’m grateful to help
in this way.”
