University of Memphis Mourns Passing of Jim Ayers
The University of Memphis is deeply saddened by the passing of Jim Ayers, a proud
alumnus and dedicated supporter of our university. Throughout his life, Jim maintained
a steadfast commitment to providing access to higher education for all, a value that
aligns with our university mission. The Ayers Foundation has provided more than 400 scholarships to UofM students since
its formation in 1999, and Jim's contributions to our institution will continue to
positively impact students for many generations to come. We send our deepest condolences
to his wife, Janet, and the Ayers family during this difficult time.
Ayers earned his degree in accounting from the university in 1965 and became the first alumnus to receive an honorary doctorate from the UofM in 2013. The UofM honored him in 2007 with the Distinguished Alumni Award and proudly celebrated the 25-year legacy of the Ayers Foundation last spring.
