Dr. Alex Parkhouse is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) at the School of Public Health. He also serves as graduate Program Coordinator for SBS. A medical sociologist by training, his research and teaching areas of expertise center on stress and mental health, social determinants of health, stigma, and qualitative methods. He is a recipient of the University of Memphis School of Public Health RISER Award. With support from the award, he founded and serves as the Director of the Community Stress and Well-being Lab. Additionally, he serves as the 2026 Chair of the public health academics section of the Tennessee Public Health Association. He is also a active member of the Latino Health Care Priorities Planning Committee for Memphis-Shelby County; a community service opportunity inspired by his adoption from Latin America and his home city of Medellin, Colombia. Dr. Parkhouse completed his PhD in Sociology at the University of New Hampshire and his MA and BA (Summa Cum Laude academic honors) in Sociology at the University of North Dakota.
