Elevating Memphis Public Health Opportunities With Engaged Researchers for High School
Students
EMPOWER Summer Initiative is a program at the University of Memphis School of Public
Health that introduces high school students to the world of public health through
immersive, real-world experiences. At the heart of the program is a team-based research
model that allows students to explore pressing health issues affecting Memphis communities
and beyond. Guided by faculty mentors and public health professionals, students work
in small groups to investigate a specific health challenge, develop a research question,
and design a project that reflects both scientific inquiry and community relevance.
Bridging Research and Real-World Impact
What makes EMPOWER truly distinctive is its integration of collaborative research
with experiential learning. Students don’t just learn about public health, they live
it. Through field visits to local health organizations, nonprofits, and community
partners, students gain firsthand insight into the systems and environments that shape
health outcomes. These experiences directly inform their research projects, helping
them connect theory to practice and understand the broader social context of their
work. EMPOWER exemplifies the University of Memphis School of Public Health’s commitment
to equity, innovation, and preparing the next generation of public health leaders
through meaningful, hands-on education.
Student Testimonials
"I met a lot of wonderful professors. I had the chance to visit the Camellia Foundation
and honestly that was a really eye-opening experience. I personally have not visited
a facility like that before. Going in person and seeing what services were being offered
really empowered me; seeing how they were really focused on a lot of the underserved
population, regardless of ethnic background, I think that was very inspiring to see."

“We went to Knowledge Quest and got to their farm. Seeing them grow the organic food
was very interesting. I think my favorite part was going to the school, the summer
program they had and seeing all those kids that are so passionate about the things
they do and having the space to do it. I think that was really awesome.”

“Today we visited the Shelby County Health Department and this is my first time coming
here and seeing the people here. It was so useful for me. I met a lot of professors,
staff and students too. I saw them doing internship here, and it was so interesting
for me because I'm looking for some places that I can do internship during my college
years. I'm going to be applying here to do an internship. EMPOWER was so helpful and
useful—I really enjoyed it.”

“When we first arrived to the Shelby County Health Department, they seemed very happy
to have us and very welcoming. They showed us around the department and we spoke to
many amazing people. What really inspired me the most is how far they would go for
the community and what they do for us, for our health and for our safety. I am really
grateful for EMPOWER. It has opened many opportunities for me.”
