Positioning Statement: The Center for Service Learning and Volunteerism is the University of Memphis hub for service, leadership development and community-based learning. The office connects students, faculty, staff, and community partners through experiences that build belonging, strengthen academic learning, develop civic responsibility, and prepare students to lead with purpose in Memphis and beyond.
Mission: The Center for Service Learning and Volunteerism advances student success by connecting students, faculty, staff and community partners through meaningful service opportunities, leadership development, civic engagement, and reciprocal community-based learning.
Vision: The Center for Service Learning and Volunteerism aspires to cultivate thriving global leaders who foster authentic connections, belonging and positive community impact in Memphis and beyond.
By the Numbers
During the 2025-2026 Academic Year:
Over 1400 students volunteered over 14,000 hours to yield an economic impact of $402,266.71 back to the greater Memphis Community (economic impact is a measure of the value of volunteer time by The Independent Sector).
53 students and 9 staff members participated in the Alternative Break Experience Program and contributed a total of 1,240 hands-on community service hours.
Across 14 Tiger Leadership Institute workshops, over 100 students attended and gained invaluable leadership skills.
Undergraduate Weil Scholars had an average 3.64 cumulative GPA in comparison to the undergraduate campus average of 3.18.
Emerging Leaders had an average 3.56 cumulative GPA in comparison to the undergraduate campus average of 3.18.
