Rail Industry Workforce Development

About Our Project

The University of Memphis SETWC, in partnership with Fairpointe Planning and Tennessee State University, is leading a research initiative sponsored by the Federal Railroad Administration to strengthen workforce recruitment and retention in the rail industry.

The project focuses on:

  • Identifying factors that influence recruitment and retention in rail careers
  • Developing a detailed set of recommendations to support workforce planning and engagement
  • Creating a practical resource toolkit for public and private organizations to improve hiring and retention practices

By addressing current challenges and opportunities, this project is designed to expand awareness of rail industry careers and position rail as a career pathway of choice.

The outcome will go beyond traditional workforce development approaches by delivering data-driven, comprehensive, and implementable tools that help ensure the long-term growth and sustainability of the rail workforce.
