Foundation Studies

Overview

In the foundation studies program, students focus on developing a strong artistic and conceptual foundation across various disciplines in the visual arts. The program serves as a stepping stone, providing students with a broad understanding of fundamental concepts, skills, and techniques before they specialize in a specific field of study such as art education, fashion design, fashion merchandising, graphic design, photography, studio arts or visual arts.

Students engage in studio courses that cover areas such as drawing, color theory, design principles, and 2D/3D composition. They acquire foundational skills in observation, mark-making, spatial understanding, and material manipulation. These courses encourage experimentation, creativity, and the development of a personal artistic voice.

In addition to studio courses, students also undertake art history. They gain an understanding of the historical, cultural, and theoretical contexts that shape artistic production. They explore art movements, significant artists, and key concepts to develop a broader knowledge of the visual arts and enhance their critical thinking and analytical skills.

The foundation studies program emphasizes exploration and interdisciplinary approaches. Students are encouraged to think outside the box, explore different media, and integrate ideas and techniques from diverse disciplines. This allows them to broaden their artistic horizons, develop versatility, and discover new ways of expressing their creativity.

Throughout the program, students participate in critiques and receive feedback from faculty and peers. This fosters a supportive and constructive environment for artistic growth and helps students refine their technical skills, conceptual understanding, and creative problem-solving abilities.
