Art Museum of the University of Memphis

  • Becoming More Myself presents visual and narrative representations of body and identity reclamation through tattoo art.  Co-curators Vanessa Waites, a professional tattoo artist who holds MA in anthropology from the U of M and Caroline Warner, a current MA anthropology student, collaborated with photographer and U of M alum Emma (Chuck) Wilson to interview and photograph 18 volunteer participants whose stories explore gender, body image, trauma, and ways in which bodies can become spaces for achieving physical, psychological, and social transformation and self-acceptance. The exhibition also explores changing perspectives on tattoos and their acceptability in contemporary culture in relation to social norms of beauty, gender, and self-image.

    • Straw
      • Straw centers around a young man who reconnects with his father while also discovering himself, his relationship to God, and learning to forgive. 
        • Amber Atkins graduated in the spring of 2023 with an MA from the Department of Communication and Film. She made two films, Metamorphosis and Straw, in her second year as a graduate student. Amber remains a prolific filmmaker and continues to work as a cinematographer on short film projects.   
    • All the Red Flags 
      • Vanessa, an insecure businesswoman finds true love in a mailman named Oscar Jones. But when a series of murderous events unfold, it's Oscar who may be hiding a dark secret. In this Studio Suggs original comedy thriller, will Vanessa see what's right in front of her, or will she miss All The Red Flags?  
        • Caleb Suggs is a Memphis-born award-winning writer, producer, director, voice talent, actor, and journalist. Since he was a child, he's had a passion for creating entertaining stories that inspire, inform, and spread joy. Now, through his production company, Studio Suggs, co-founded with his brother, he works toward his dream of running a television station and production company that will share his unique stories with audiences around the world.  
    • Red Handkerchief  
      • Once upon a time in 1954 Pakistan... Iqbal Malik struggles to meet his weight goal to follow his dreams of enlisting, but meeting a beautiful nurse on night shift forces him to make a difficult choice.  
        • Imaan Malik graduated in the spring of 2023 with an MA from the Department of Communication and Film. She made two short films as a student, including Red Handkerchief, a personal story made about the experiences of her grandparents.  Currently, Imaan works as a videographer at St. Jude and enjoys nonprofit work and sharing inspirational stories.
