SMART Center - School Mental Health Access to Resources through Teletherapy (SMART) Research, Training and Treatment Center

About the Clinic

In June 2020, Dr. Susan Elswick received funding from the Urban Child Institute and The University of Memphis Institute for Interdisciplinary Memphis Partnerships to Advance Community Transformation (iIMPACT) to develop a tele-behavioral health training and treatment program for the region due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health service delivery in the region. With this seed funding, Dr. Elswick launched the School Mental Health Access Through Teletherapy (SMART) Research, Training, and Treatment Center.

The University of Memphis School of Social Work SMART Research, Training and Treatment Center aims to provide evidence-based interventions for school-based mental health programming, increase access for school-based behavioral health programming in underserved areas, provide training on best practices in tele-behavioral health, develop opportunities to research the use of technology in practice, and provide direct services to the states most vulnerable populations.

Mission

The mission of the SMART Research, Training, and Treatment Center is to develop scholarly research in the field, provide competency-based professional training and consultation to the community, provide training in higher education to support the workforce development of this growing field, provide effective, evidence-based therapeutic interventions, and advance the responsible use of technology in school-based and mental health practice. The mission of the program is to provide easily accessible and affordable support services for tele-behavioral health in the region.

About the Clinic
 
The University of Memphis Autism Treatment, Training and Research Clinic, directed by Dr. Thouraya Al-Nasser, is dedicated to improving outcomes for children with autism spectrum disorder and supporting their families through evidence-based services, professional training, and applied research. The clinic's team of Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and graduate trainees utilizes the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to provide individualized interventions that promote positive behavioral, social, communication, and adaptive skill development. Services are offered in a variety of settings, including the clinic, home, school, and community, to ensure meaningful and lasting outcomes. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, caregiver involvement, and community partnerships, the clinic aims to expand access to high-quality autism services, advance research in the field, and prepare the next generation of behavioral health professionals.

The mission of the UofM Autism Treatment, Training and Research Clinic is to provide evidence-based assessment and intervention services, support families and caregivers through education and training, advance research related to autism and developmental disabilities, and develop a skilled workforce dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with autism across home, school, and community settings.

School of Social Work

The School of Social Work resides in the School of Urban Affairs & Public Policy within the College of Arts & Sciences. The School offers three degree programs and a graduate certificate in School Social Work. The Bachelors of Arts in Social Work program and the Master of Social Work program are both fully accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE). Our new Doctor of Social Work Program launched in Fall 2020.

Instruction and Curriculum Leadership (ICL)

The ICL Department offers one undergraduate degree--a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSED) and four graduate degrees: the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) the Master of Science (MS), and the Doctor of Education (EdD). We also offer certificates in Applied Behavior Analysis, Instructional Design and Technology, and Urban Education. And we offer Endorsements for Reading Specialist and School Library Specialist.
