Counseling, Education Psychology, and Research (CEPR)

In addition to our academic programs, CEPR houses a clinical research center: The University of Memphis Institute on Disability (UMID). UMID also houses TigerLIFE (Tigers Learning Independence Fostering Education and Employment), the largest and most ethnically diverse program for intellectually/developmentally disabled adults in the state of Tennessee. The clinical programs in CEPR participate in the university-wide Interprofessional Community Health Clinic (ICHC), a clinical training and research center that provides a variety of health and wellness services to the UofM, Memphis, and neighboring communities.

University of Memphis Psychological Assessment Clinic (UMPAC)

Mission

Our mission is to provide affordable psychological assessment services without compromising quality. We aim to serve the greater Memphis community by producing individualized, valid, and reliable work products that are backed by scientific research and endorsed by the practice of psychology. We also aim to uphold the high educational standards of the University of Memphis by serving as a premier center for graduate training in counseling psychology and related disciplines. Across all of aims, we are committed to promoting and modeling social justice, equity, and inclusivity.

Scope of Practice

We provide state-of-the-art psychological assessment services to adults ages 18+ with a variety of presenting concerns and needs including:

  1. Psychodiagnostic clarification
  2. Psychotherapy treatment planning
  3. Suicide risk assessment
  4. Violence or offense risk assessment
  5. ADHD and Learning Disorder evaluations
  6. Intellectual and Developmental Disability evaluations
  7. Neuropsychological screenings
  8. Pre-employment evaluations

We do not currently provide services to children or adolescents. We also cannot provide comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations (e.g., determinations of aphasias, dementias, traumatic brain injury) or evaluations to diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorders.


Memphis Speech and Hearing Center

The Memphis Speech and Hearing Center was established in 1947 by its Board of Directors to provide a full range of clinical services to individuals with communication disorders. Since 1967, the Center has been affiliated with The University of Memphis. It's also the site of the UofM's School of Communication Sciences and Disorders. State-of-the-art research laboratories and a graduate education program, combined with the Center's well-respected clinical program, make it one of the premier speech and hearing facilities in the nation.

The Center's professional staff provides speech, language, and hearing evaluations and offers treatment programs tailored to individual needs. A wide array of diagnostic equipment and materials makes it possible to evaluate communication problems experienced by clients of any age, from infants to adults. Based on evaluation results, clinicians work with clients, parents, and families to develop appropriate, functional treatment plans.

The University of Memphis School of Communication Sciences and Disorders is nationally recognized for its academic, research, and clinical education programs for educating future audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, or hearing scientists interested in helping individuals with such communication disorders.

The Loewenberg College of Nursing (LCON), situated in a diverse metropolitan community, is committed to the preparation of nursing professionals who share a common goal of promoting health and achieving health equity of the global community. Both the baccalaureate and master's programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing.

School of Social Work

The School of Social Work resides in the School of Urban Affairs & Public Policy within the College of Arts & Sciences. The School offers three degree programs and a graduate certificate in School Social Work. The Bachelors of Arts in Social Work program and the Master of Social Work program are both fully accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE). Our new Doctor of Social Work Program launched in Fall 2020.

Center for the Advancement of Youth Development (CAYD)

CAYD conducts important research and provides services to youth and families in low-income areas. CAYD promotes the advancement of youth development by building the capacity of youth-serving organizations through collaborating to design, evaluate, and implement culturally responsive and effective interventions. Our aim is sustainable interventions to improve the life outcomes of youth and families.

SMART Center - School Mental Health Access to Resources through Teletherapy (SMART) Research, Training and Treatment Center

In June 2020, Dr. Susan Elswick received funding from the Urban Child Institute and The University of Memphis Institute for Interdisciplinary Memphis Partnerships to Advance Community Transformation (iIMPACT) to develop a tele-behavioral health training and treatment program for the region due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health service delivery in the region. With this seed funding, Dr. Elswick launched the School Mental Health Access Through Teletherapy (SMART) Research, Training, and Treatment Center.

The University of Memphis School of Social Work SMART Research, Training and Treatment Center aims to provide evidence-based interventions for school-based mental health programming, increase access for school-based behavioral health programming in underserved areas, provide training on best practices in tele-behavioral health, develop opportunities to research the use of technology in practice, and provide direct services to the states most vulnerable populations.

The mission of the SMART Research, Training, and Treatment Center is to develop scholarly research in the field, provide competency-based professional training and consultation to the community, provide training in higher education to support the workforce development of this growing field, provide effective, evidence-based therapeutic interventions, and advance the responsible use of technology in school-based and mental health practice. The mission of the program is to provide easily accessible and affordable support services for tele-behavioral health in the region.

Instruction and Curriculum Leadership (ICL)

The ICL Department offers one undergraduate degree--a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSED) and four graduate degrees: the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) the Master of Science (MS), and the Doctor of Education (EdD). We also offer certificates in Applied Behavior Analysis, Instructional Design and Technology, and Urban Education. And we offer Endorsements for Reading Specialist and School Library Specialist.
