SPH Hosts PH on Wheels FUME Tour
November 19, 2025 -The University of Memphis School of Public Health (SPH) hosted its second Public Health on Wheels field trip, called the FUME Tour, which stands for “Field Understanding of the Memphis Environment.”
The Hop-On-Hop-Off tour guided SPH students to some of the key environmental locations in the city, identified as major air polluters. Students were led by Mr. Jim Holt from the Division of Solid Waste Management at the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, along with Dr. Chunrong Jia, a UofM SPH Professor and expert in air pollution, exposure assessment, environmental disparity and urban health. They provided an informative tour highlighting the companies and factories contributing to air quality issues in Memphis.
Students visited key sites including President’s Island, Valero Refinery, the Wastewater Treatment Facility and the xAI facility, allowing them to observe firsthand the impact these operations have on local health and the environment.
This unique experience provided SPH students with valuable insights into the environmental challenges facing the local community and the efforts of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation to mitigate the environmental impacts of these companies.
At SPH, we believe that immersing students in real-world situations through hands-on learning experiences will help shape the next generation of public health leaders.
