SSPH+ Public Health Reviews (PHR) Publication: Agenda for Public Health Diplomacy in an Age of Populism
Thursday, 04 December 2025
Dean Ashish Joshi from the University of Memphis School of Public Health collaborated in the publishing of Agenda for Public Health Diplomacy in an Age of Populism in collaboration with the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER), European Public Health Association (EUPHA) and collaborators from other countries including Portugal, Lithuania, United Kingdom and other US collaborators from New York and Washington DC.
The paper discussed how public health faces challenges from an increase in populism, disinformation, and weakened global institutions. This leads to the threat to international cooperation, equity, and trust in science.
Nine key actions were proposed. The proposal is a call to re-envision public health diplomacy as a moral and strategic necessity, not merely a technical task. Traditional diplomatic methods cannot stand alone. In a world marked by populism, misinformation, and political resistance, the stakes for global health are higher than ever.
