UofM SPH and Shelby County Health Department Kick-Off Speaker Series

Topic: Reproductive and Sexual Health

Friday, 27 February 2026

The University of Memphis School of Public Health and Shelby County Health Department Speaker Series kicked off the first speaker series event of the semester on Friday, February 27, 2026, which addressed the topic of Reproductive and Sexual Health. The featured speakers were Erica R. Grant Ervin, MPH, MSN, FNP –BC and Misty Hayes-Winton.

Erica Grant Ervin, MPH, MSN, FNP –BC is a Reproductive Health Coordinator at the Shelby County Health Department, and Misty Hayes-Winton is the Deputy Administrator for HIV and Clinical Services at the Shelby County Health Department.

They shared with us how sexual health is an important part of health and wellness. The Shelby County Health Department offers services for all adults and sees individuals ages 13 and up. Sexual health is more than knowing about sexually transmitted infections (STIs), disease risks, and other safety precautions. It is also maintaining healthy communication and relationships.

The department has a sexual health program which provides free condoms, HIV early intervention, PrEP, and case management services, STI testing and treatment, counseling, and education brochures and materials.  They also have a sexual health clinic with many additional resources available. With the rising incidence rates of HIV and STIs in the Mid-South, they stressed the importance of prompt testing and appropriate treatment which are essential for optimal health.
