Dr. Naser Titu Presents Sickle Cell Research at National Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Conference

Friday, 16 October 2026

Abu Mohammed Naser Titu, PhD, MPH, MBBS, assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Memphis School of Public Health (UofM SPH), delivered an oral abstract presentation at the 54th Annual National Convention of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA) in Concord, North Carolina on October 16, 2026.

His research highlighted the annual comorbidity burden among people living with sickle cell in Tennessee between 2007 and 2020. Hypertension, diabetes and heart failure were among the most prevalent conditions evaluated. Those older than 18 years of age had 4-fold higher odds of stroke compared to those younger than 18 (aOR 3.90, 95% CI 1.87-8.15). The presentation highlighted an epidemiologic shift toward a greater burden of chronic disease as life expectancy increases among people living with sickle cell disease.

As a result of this work, Dr. Titu was personally invited by SCDAA to publish these findings in the Journal of Sickle Cell Disease. The manuscript will be forthcoming.
