SPH Launches Student-led Global Health Club Platform
Thursday, 29 October 2026
Through the GHC, students from the School of Public Health, and the university at large, can work together to find collaborative solutions and raise awareness on issues such as emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, food and water insecurity, displacement, maternal and child health, and health inequities.
SPH Faculty Advisor and Professor, Dr. Fanta D. Gutema, kicked off the GHC launch event, with introductions and an overview of the platform, highlighting what students can expect, and some of the various opportunities that will stem from becoming a GHC leader. Dr. Gutema highlights, “Global health can be local health and engagement of the students in exploring both local and global health challenges to help serve the community to prevent public health problems. This initiative will give students firsthand insights into the glocal health environment and pave the way toward global collaboration and partnerships in addressing global health challenges.”
During the inaugural event, Dr. Gutema noted that the GHC leadership team has been nominated, with the roles of president, deputy president, secretary, treasury and outreach lead filled.
Morgan Linsy, Senior Coordinator of Training and Development at the Office of Student Engagement, at The University of Memphis, provided students with an informational session about establishing organizations on campus and discussed the ins and outs of hosting on-campus events, fundraisers, and how to make sure students are in compliance with banking procedures with regards to their initiatives.
The GHC platform prepares students to become collaborative and socially responsible public health professionals. The School of Public Health welcomes student participation as the platform expands.
