AmeriCorps

In partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the University of Memphis AmeriCorps VISTA Program mobilizes higher education and non-profit organizations to improve education outcomes for community members in poverty. Our VISTA sites’ projects are developed in accordance with AmeriCorps VISTA’s core principles: an anti-poverty focus, community empowerment, sustainable solutions and capacity building.

 

 2018-2019 AmeriCorps VISTA Stats

In alignment with the mission and goals of AmeriCorps, the University of Memphis AmeriCorps VISTA program concentrates on capacity building efforts in the following education based focus areas:

  • Education
    • Within this priority area the University of Memphis supports projects that leverage a VISTA member to enhance access to services and resources that contribute to improved educational outcomes for economically disadvantaged children and youth. Previous and current project sites have included:
      • Carpenter Art Garden: Project site for both year 1 and 2 of the VISTA program
      • Su Casa Family Ministries: Project site for year 1 of the VISTA program
      • Early Learning and Research Center (Pre-School): Project site for year 2 of the VISTA program
      • University Campus School (Elementary): Project site for year 2 of the VISTA program
      • University Middle School: Project site for year 2 of the VISTA program
  • Healthy Futures
    • Within this poverty area, the University of Memphis VISTA Project supports projects that leverage a VISTA member to enhance access to services and resources that contribute to improved food security and awareness of healthy food options/preparation
      • UofM Tiger Pantry: Project site for year 1 and 2 of the VISTA program
  • Environmental Stewardship:
    • Within this poverty area the University of Memphis supports projects that leverage a VISTA member to build capacity for education and training in environmental stewardship and/or environmentally conscious practices for low-income individuals in low-income communities. This includes education and training programs and service learning.
      • TIGUrS Urban Garden: Project site for year 2 of the VISTA program
      • University Campus School Garden: Project site for year 2 of the VISTA Program
      • Early Learning and Research Center Garden: Project site for year 2 of the VISTA program
