Researchers Uncover Evidence of Long-Lost Nile Tributary
While in several parts of the world a dried-up riverbed is more often a cause for concern than celebration, a triad of researchers including a University of Memphis professor of Egyptology has uncovered evidence that an ancient tributary of the Nile River existed thousands of years ago, a significant discovery archaeologists can now use to pinpoint with precision additional areas warranting future research.

Earthquake Research Center at UofM Welcomes New Director
The Center for Earthquake Research and Information at the University of Memphis welcomed a new director to start off the new semester. Vadim Levin, PhD, most recently of Rutgers University, will lead the team at CERI, a Tennessee Center of Excellence that monitors earthquake activity in a large part of eastern North America, conducting fundamental research on the causes and consequences of earthquakes, including the way temblors happen and the impact they have on society.

“Black Patience” Named Hooks National Book Award Winner
The Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at the University of Memphis has selected “Black Patience: Performance, Civil Rights, and the Unfinished Project of Emancipation” by Dr. Julius B. Fleming, Jr. (New York University Press) as the 2022 Hooks National Book Award winner. The award will be presented in February

Communities of Research Scholars Program Funds Record Number of Awards
A record number of research projects spanning several disciplines received funding through the Communities of Research Scholars in 2023. The Division of Research & Innovation at the University of Memphis funded 27 teams, making it the largest cohort to receive these awards.

UofM Center for Information Assurance Receives $1M as Part of Cybersecurity Research Award from FEMA, DHS
As a core member of the National Cybersecurity Preparedness Consortium, the University of Memphis Center for Information Assurance has received $1 million as part of a larger grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security to conduct research on cybersecurity issues with a goal of developing workforce education resources for various industry sectors.

Experts Struggle to Identify Human Text from AI in Study Co-Authored by UofM’s Dr. J. Elliott Casal
University of Memphis Applied Linguistics professor Dr. J. Elliott Casal recently co-authored a study that revealed trained linguists and reviewers from top academic journals were largely unsuccessful in identifying artificial intelligence (AI) versus human writing of research abstracts, with an overall positive identification rate of only 38.9%.
