Dr. Mohammed joined the Department of Biological Sciences in 2026. He teaches Microbiology and Biology of Cells at the Lambuth Campus. His research spans bacteriophage biology and the characterization of novel bacterial species. His phage research investigates prophage-mediated defense systems and the mechanisms by which these systems shape recombination and evolution between phage genomes, with an emphasis on understanding how bacteria and their viruses co-evolve. He also continues to lead work characterizing novel bacterial species in partnership with the Infectious Disease Research Laboratory, Mayo Clinic, a collaboration that grew out of his postdoctoral research there.
